John 6:15

King James Bible

"When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone."

Commentary

Jesus recognizes the crowd's intent to forcibly crown him as their political messiah. This follows the feeding of the 5,000, where the people saw his miraculous power and wanted to harness it for nationalistic purposes against Roman rule. The crowd seeks an earthly king to overthrow Rome and restore Israel's independence. This reveals their misunderstanding of Jesus' mission—they desire a military deliverer rather than the spiritual Savior he came to be. Jesus withdraws to solitude, rejecting their agenda and maintaining his divine purpose. The mountain setting recalls his pattern of seeking communion with the Father in isolation, especially when facing pivotal moments or temptations.
