John 3:22

King James Bible

"After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized."

Commentary

Following his conversation with Nicodemus in Jerusalem, Jesus moves to the Judean countryside with his followers. This geographical shift marks a transition from urban teaching to rural ministry, where Jesus would have more freedom to work without constant scrutiny from religious authorities. Rather than rushing through, Jesus intentionally spent extended time in this region. The word 'tarried' suggests an unhurried, deliberate ministry period focused on discipleship and community building with his followers. Jesus conducts a baptismal ministry parallel to John the Baptist's work, though John 4:2 clarifies that the disciples performed the actual baptisms. This practice reinforced the message of repentance and spiritual renewal that both Jesus and John proclaimed.
