John 3:20

King James Bible

"For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved."

Commentary

Jesus explains the spiritual principle that those who practice wickedness develop an aversion to truth and righteousness. The 'light' here refers to Christ himself and the revealing nature of God's truth, which exposes the true nature of sinful actions. This describes the deliberate avoidance and rejection of Christ by those committed to evil. Their hatred of light results in active resistance to approaching Jesus, who would illuminate their spiritual condition. The underlying motive is fear of exposure and conviction—evil-doers avoid the light because it would reveal and condemn their actions. This connects to the broader context of Nicodemus coming to Jesus at night, illustrating how divine light brings both salvation and judgment.
