John 14:8

King James Bible

"Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us."

Commentary

Philip addresses Jesus directly during the Last Supper discourse, where Jesus has been speaking about going to the Father. His approach shows both respect and a personal relationship with Jesus as his teacher and Lord. Philip requests a direct, visible revelation of God the Father, perhaps expecting a theophany like Moses experienced. This reveals the disciples' struggle to grasp Jesus' divine identity despite years of witnessing his ministry. Philip believes that seeing the Father would satisfy all doubts and questions, providing complete spiritual fulfillment. His statement ironically misses that Jesus himself is the full revelation of the Father they seek.
