John 14:6

King James Bible

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

Commentary

Jesus responds directly to Thomas's question about knowing the way to where Jesus is going. This personal address occurs during the Last Supper discourse, where Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure. Jesus claims exclusive identity with three fundamental concepts: the path to God, ultimate reality itself, and the source of eternal existence. This triple declaration forms one of seven "I am" statements in John's Gospel, echoing God's self-revelation to Moses. Christ asserts his unique mediatorial role between humanity and God, establishing that access to the Father requires going through him. This exclusivity claim reinforces his divine nature and central position in salvation history.
