John 14:4

King James Bible

"And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know."

Commentary

Jesus assumes his disciples understand his destination—the Father's house through his impending death and resurrection. This statement comes during the Last Supper discourse, where Jesus has been preparing them for his departure. His confidence in their knowledge contrasts with their actual confusion, which Thomas voices in the next verse. Beyond knowing the destination, Jesus asserts they know the path itself—himself as the way to the Father. This builds on his earlier teaching about being the good shepherd and the door, though the disciples haven't yet grasped that Jesus himself is the way rather than merely showing it.
