John 14:26

King James Bible

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

Commentary

Jesus introduces the Holy Spirit as the 'Comforter' (Greek: Parakletos, meaning advocate or helper), emphasizing divine assistance after his departure. The Father sending the Spirit 'in Jesus' name' establishes continuity between Christ's earthly ministry and the Spirit's ongoing work. The Spirit's primary role includes instructing believers in spiritual truth, expanding their understanding beyond what human wisdom could grasp. This promise addresses the disciples' anxiety about losing Jesus as their teacher. Beyond new teaching, the Spirit actively recalls Christ's words to the disciples' minds, ensuring accurate preservation and application of Jesus' teachings. This function proved crucial for the apostles who would later record the Gospels and establish the early church.
