John 14:22

King James Bible

"Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?"

Commentary

The author carefully distinguishes this Judas (likely Judas Thaddaeus) from Judas Iscariot, the betrayer. This clarification shows multiple disciples shared the common name Judas and ensures readers understand a faithful disciple is speaking. Judas asks about Jesus' promise to reveal himself to his followers after his resurrection. The question reflects the disciples' struggle to understand how Jesus could be present with them in a new way after his physical departure. This phrase reveals the disciples' expectation that the Messiah would publicly establish an earthly kingdom visible to all. Judas cannot yet grasp the spiritual nature of Christ's post-resurrection manifestation through the Holy Spirit to believers only.
