John 14:20

King James Bible

"At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you."

Commentary

Jesus points to a future moment of revelation—likely referring to his resurrection or the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost—when the disciples will gain experiential understanding. This knowledge moves beyond intellectual assent to intimate spiritual awareness. Christ affirms his divine unity with God the Father, a central claim of his deity throughout John's Gospel. This mutual indwelling expresses the perfect communion within the Godhead that Jesus has repeatedly testified about. The astonishing promise extends this divine union to believers themselves, who will participate in the same intimate relationship through Christ. This reciprocal indwelling—believers in Christ and Christ in believers—forms the foundation of Christian mystical union and transformed life.
