John 14:18

King James Bible

"I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."

Commentary

Jesus promises his disciples they won't be abandoned as orphans (the Greek word implies those left helpless without a guardian). This assurance comes as he prepares them for his physical departure through crucifixion, addressing their anxiety about losing their teacher and friend. This promise has multiple fulfillments: his resurrection appearances, the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and his eventual second coming. The emphatic "I will" underscores Jesus's personal commitment to maintain relationship with his followers despite physical separation.
