John 14:17

King James Bible

"Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."

Commentary

Jesus identifies the promised Helper as the Spirit characterized by truth—one who reveals reality as God sees it and guides believers into all truth. This title emphasizes the Spirit's role in illuminating spiritual understanding and opposing deception. The unregenerate world system lacks spiritual perception to recognize or accept the Spirit's work. This inability stems from spiritual blindness rather than the Spirit's hiddenness, highlighting the divide between those oriented toward God and those oriented toward worldly values. In contrast to the world, the disciples already experience the Spirit's presence through Christ's ministry among them. This present-tense dwelling indicates the Spirit's active work even before Pentecost, preparing them for deeper relationship. Jesus promises a future intensification from the Spirit being "with" them to being "in" them—pointing to the permanent indwelling that would begin at Pentecost. This shift from external presence to internal residence marks the new covenant's distinctive blessing.
