King James Bible
"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;"
Jesus positions himself as the mediator between the disciples and God, emphasizing his intercessory role. This promise comes during the Last Supper discourse, as Jesus prepares his followers for his imminent departure through crucifixion. The Greek word 'allos' (another) indicates a comforter of the same kind as Jesus himself, while 'Paraclete' means advocate, helper, or one called alongside. This refers to the Holy Spirit, who will continue Christ's presence and ministry among believers. Unlike Jesus' physical presence which was temporary, the Spirit's indwelling will be permanent and unending. This eternal companionship contrasts with the abandonment the disciples feared, offering them perpetual divine presence and support.
