John 14:12

King James Bible

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."

Commentary

Jesus uses the double 'amen' (verily, verily) to emphasize the absolute certainty and importance of what follows. This solemn formula appears frequently in John's Gospel when Jesus introduces profound spiritual truths. Jesus promises that believers will perform the same miraculous works He did—healing, deliverance, and proclamation of God's kingdom. This astounding claim links the disciples' future ministry directly to faith in Christ as the source of divine power. The 'greater works' likely refers to the global scope and lasting impact of the apostolic mission after Pentecost. While Jesus' earthly ministry was geographically limited, His followers would spread the gospel worldwide and see thousands converted. Jesus explains that His departure enables these greater works through the sending of the Holy Spirit. His ascension and glorification inaugurate a new era where believers operate with divine authority through the Spirit's indwelling presence.
