John 13:4

King James Bible

"He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself."

Commentary

Jesus interrupts the Passover meal, deliberately standing during this sacred gathering. This action signals the beginning of something significant, as hosts typically remained seated throughout formal meals in Jewish culture. By removing his outer robe, Jesus strips away the visible markers of his rabbinical authority and status. This voluntary disrobing parallels how he would later lay down his life, foreshadowing the crucifixion through symbolic action. Jesus assumes the dress and posture of a household slave, wrapping himself with the towel used for menial tasks. This shocking reversal—the Master becoming servant—demonstrates the radical nature of kingdom leadership through humble service.
