John 13:30

King James Bible

"He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night."

Commentary

Judas accepts the bread dipped in wine from Jesus, a gesture that in Middle Eastern culture typically honored a guest. This ironic act of hospitality becomes the final trigger for betrayal, as Satan enters Judas at this moment according to the preceding verses. The word 'immediately' emphasizes Judas's decisive departure from the fellowship to execute his betrayal. His exit represents a spiritual separation from Jesus and the disciples, choosing darkness over the Light of the world. John's stark observation works on multiple levels: literally marking the time, but symbolically representing the spiritual darkness Judas enters. This detail foreshadows the coming hours of Jesus's arrest and crucifixion, when evil appears to triumph.
