John 13:27

King James Bible

"And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly."

Commentary

The sop (bread dipped in wine) was a gesture of honor at Passover meals, yet it marks the moment Satan takes full possession of Judas. This dramatic spiritual transfer occurs immediately after Jesus' final act of love toward his betrayer, highlighting the tragic irony of Judas's choice. Jesus directly addresses Judas with full knowledge of the betrayal about to unfold. This demonstrates Christ's sovereign control even over his own passion—he is not a victim but willingly permits events to proceed. Jesus commands Judas to hasten his betrayal, actively setting in motion the events leading to the crucifixion. The other disciples misunderstand this cryptic instruction, showing how Jesus alone comprehends the full weight of this pivotal moment in salvation history.
