John 13:25

King James Bible

"He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?"

Commentary

The beloved disciple (traditionally John) reclines next to Jesus at the Last Supper, following the ancient practice of dining while reclining on couches. This physical closeness highlights the intimate relationship between this disciple and Jesus, positioning him to ask the urgent question privately. Prompted by Peter's gesture (v.24), the disciple asks Jesus to identify the betrayer He just mentioned. The direct address 'Lord' shows reverence while the question reveals the disciples' shock and confusion about which of them could possibly betray their master.
