John 13:11

King James Bible

"For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean."

Commentary

Jesus possesses divine foreknowledge of Judas's impending betrayal, demonstrating his omniscience even as he approaches his death. This awareness adds poignancy to the foot-washing scene, as Jesus serves even the one who will hand him over to his enemies. The statement refers back to verse 10's declaration about the disciples' cleanliness, creating a double meaning—while physically clean from foot-washing, Judas remains spiritually unclean due to his treacherous heart. Jesus subtly distinguishes between external ritual purity and the internal spiritual state that truly matters.
