King James Bible
"His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?"
The disciples address Jesus with concern, using 'Master' (Rabbi) to show respect while preparing to question his decision. This sets up a moment of tension between their protective instincts and Jesus' divine mission. They recall the recent attempt on Jesus' life in Jerusalem (John 10:31-39), where religious leaders tried to stone him for blasphemy. 'Of late' emphasizes the freshness and danger of this threat, making their fear reasonable and immediate. Their incredulous question reveals both care for Jesus' safety and misunderstanding of his purpose. They cannot comprehend why he would willingly return to mortal danger, not yet grasping that his journey to raise Lazarus will ultimately lead to his own death and resurrection.
