John 11:6

King James Bible

"When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was."

Commentary

Jesus receives word that Lazarus, whom he loves, is seriously ill. The "therefore" connects to the previous verses where Mary and Martha sent urgent word expecting Jesus to come immediately, given their close relationship. Jesus deliberately delays for two full days, a shocking response to an urgent plea. This intentional waiting ensures Lazarus will be unmistakably dead (four days by arrival), setting up a resurrection that no one could dispute as mere recovery. Jesus remains exactly where he is, likely in Perea beyond the Jordan. His staying put emphasizes the deliberate nature of the delay—not hesitation or fear, but sovereign timing for displaying God's glory through a greater miracle.
