John 10:35

King James Bible

"If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;"

Commentary

Jesus references Psalm 82:6 where human judges/rulers are called 'gods' because they received divine authority through God's word. This lesser-to-greater argument defends his own claim to divinity—if mere humans who received God's word could be called gods, how much more the Word incarnate. Christ affirms Scripture's absolute authority and reliability, asserting that even a single word from an obscure psalm carries binding force. This parenthetical statement reveals Jesus' high view of Scripture's inspiration, where every detail remains inviolable and permanently valid.
