John 10:34

King James Bible

"Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?"

Commentary

Jesus responds to the Jewish leaders who accused him of blasphemy for claiming to be God's Son. This introduces his defense using their own scriptures to counter their charge. Jesus refers to Psalm 82:6 as part of "your law," using the broader Jewish understanding that included the Psalms as Torah. His rhetorical question forces his accusers to confront their own sacred texts. This quote from Psalm 82 originally addressed human judges who represented God's authority. Jesus uses this lesser-to-greater argument: if scripture calls mere humans "gods," how much more appropriate is his claim to be God's Son.
