"There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings."

Commentary

The word 'again' indicates this is a recurring pattern—Jesus' teachings repeatedly split his Jewish audience into opposing camps. John uses 'division' (Greek: schisma) to show how Jesus' claims about being the Good Shepherd and having divine authority forced people to take sides. The specific cause of division was Jesus' preceding discourse about being the Good Shepherd who lays down his life and his claim to have received this authority from the Father. These radical assertions about his identity and mission demanded a response—either acceptance or rejection.
