John 1:35

King James Bible

"Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;"

Commentary

This phrase establishes temporal continuity with the previous day's events when John identified Jesus as the Lamb of God. The repetition suggests John's deliberate, consistent witness rather than a one-time declaration. John's physical posture of standing indicates his active role as a witness and teacher. In the ancient world, teachers often stood to instruct, showing John's continued ministry even as he prepares to direct his followers to Jesus. These two followers (one later identified as Andrew) represent John's success in making disciples, yet also foreshadow his willingness to decrease so Christ might increase. Their presence sets up the pivotal moment when John will point them away from himself toward Jesus.
