"The same was in the beginning with God."

Commentary

This phrase reaffirms that the Word (identified in verse 1) existed from eternity past, before creation began. John emphasizes continuity—the Word who became flesh is the same eternal being who predates all things. The Word's eternal existence was in intimate fellowship and union with God the Father.
