John 1:16

King James Bible

"And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace."

Commentary

John declares that believers draw from Christ's inexhaustible completeness—his divine nature, perfect righteousness, and infinite resources. The perfect tense "have received" emphasizes this as an accomplished reality for all who believe, not merely a future promise. This unique phrase literally means "grace upon grace" or "grace replacing grace," depicting God's favor as waves continuously breaking on the shore. Each experience of divine grace is followed by another, creating an endless succession of God's unmerited kindness in the believer's life.
