John 1:13

King James Bible

"Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."

Commentary

This refers to spiritual birth distinct from physical lineage or ancestry. In the Jewish context, being Abraham's descendant was significant, but John emphasizes that becoming God's child transcends bloodline inheritance. Human desire and decision cannot produce this spiritual birth—neither through natural procreation nor human determination. The repetition intensifies the point that no human agency, whether physical impulse or deliberate choice, can accomplish this transformation. The divine origin stands in sharp contrast to all human means. This birth is entirely God's sovereign work, emphasizing that becoming a child of God is a supernatural act initiated and completed by divine power alone.
