Job 3:6

King James Bible

"As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months."

Commentary

Job curses the night of his conception, wishing for supernatural darkness to consume it entirely. This personification of darkness as an active force that can 'seize' reflects ancient Near Eastern beliefs about primordial chaos swallowing up time itself. Job desires this night to be excluded from the calendar year, essentially erased from the flow of time. This represents a wish to undo his very existence by removing the temporal moment of his conception from history. The parallel structure intensifies the previous wish, asking that this night be omitted from monthly reckonings as well. This double negation of the night's place in time underscores Job's desperate desire to have never been born.
