Job 3:19

King James Bible

"The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master."

Commentary

Job observes that death is the great equalizer where social distinctions vanish—both the lowly and the mighty share the same fate in Sheol. This reflects his anguished meditation on death as a place where earthly hierarchies and sufferings cease to matter. In death, the oppressed find liberation from their earthly bondage and the power structures that controlled them. Job sees this freedom from servitude as one of death's bitter mercies, highlighting his current view that non-existence offers more relief than his present torment.
