Job 3:10

King James Bible

"Because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes."

Commentary

Job laments that the day of his birth failed to prevent his conception by closing his mother's womb. The metaphor of 'doors' reflects ancient Near Eastern imagery where the womb was viewed as having an entrance that could be opened or shut by divine action. The day is further blamed for not concealing suffering from Job's experience. This personification continues Job's curse against his birth-day, holding it responsible for allowing him to live and therefore witness the extreme grief that now consumes him.
