Job 2:9

King James Bible

"Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die."

Commentary

Job's wife speaks after witnessing her husband's catastrophic losses and his painful physical affliction with boils. Her intervention marks the only recorded words from her in the narrative, highlighting the significance of this moment of deepest despair. She questions Job's persistent righteousness with apparent incredulity, suggesting his faithfulness has brought no protection from suffering. The Hebrew word for 'integrity' (tummah) implies wholeness and moral completeness, the very quality God had praised in Job. She advises Job to abandon his faith through blasphemy, which would presumably bring divine judgment and end his misery. This counsel ironically echoes Satan's prediction that Job would 'curse God to his face' under sufficient pressure.
