Job 1:3

King James Bible

"His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east."

Commentary

Job's wealth is measured in livestock, the primary currency of ancient Near Eastern pastoral societies. The specific numbers emphasize extraordinary abundance—sheep for wool and meat, camels for long-distance trade, oxen for agriculture, and donkeys for local transport. Beyond animals, Job possessed numerous servants and workers needed to manage such vast holdings. In the ancient world, a large household indicated both wealth and social responsibility as a patron providing for many dependents. Job's preeminence extends beyond mere wealth to regional influence and honor. The "east" likely refers to the Arabian or Transjordanian region, establishing Job as the exemplar of success before his coming trials.
