James 2:22

King James Bible

"Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?"

Commentary

James points to Abraham's example, showing that genuine faith actively cooperates with deeds—'wrought' meaning worked together or collaborated. This challenges any notion that faith exists in isolation from action, emphasizing their inseparable partnership in Abraham's obedience. Works complete or bring faith to its intended goal—'perfect' here means fully realized or matured, not morally flawless. James argues that Abraham's actions (offering Isaac) demonstrated and fulfilled his faith, proving that authentic belief naturally produces corresponding behavior.
