James 1:17

King James Bible

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."

Commentary

James emphasizes that all genuinely beneficial things originate from God, using repetition ('good' and 'perfect') to stress completeness. This counters any notion that God might be the source of temptation or evil, which he addressed in the preceding verses. God is depicted as the creator of celestial bodies—sun, moon, and stars—establishing Him as the ultimate source of illumination both physical and spiritual. The present tense 'cometh down' indicates God's continuous, active giving rather than a one-time act. Unlike the heavenly bodies He created, which shift positions and cast changing shadows, God remains absolutely constant and unchanging. This astronomical metaphor assures believers that God's generous character and commitment to good gifts will never fluctuate or diminish.
