Isaiah 40:26

King James Bible

"Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth."

Commentary

Isaiah calls the exiled Israelites to look upward at the night sky and contemplate the Creator behind the vast celestial display. This upward gaze shifts perspective from earthly troubles to divine sovereignty, reminding a discouraged people that their God is the cosmic architect. God marshals the stars like a commander organizing troops, knowing each one individually despite their countless multitude. Ancient Near Eastern cultures often deified celestial bodies, but Isaiah emphasizes they are merely God's creation, subject to His personal oversight and command. The verse climaxes with God's inexhaustible power that sustains every star without exception. This assurance speaks directly to Israel's fear of being forgotten in exile—if God's strength prevents even one star from falling, surely He will not abandon His covenant people.
