Isaiah 40:25

King James Bible

"To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One."

Commentary

God challenges Israel to find any comparison to Him among the gods of nations or created things. This rhetorical question follows verses describing God's sovereign control over creation, emphasizing His absolute uniqueness and incomparability. The parallelism intensifies the challenge—not only is there no likeness, but no equal in power, wisdom, or being. This directly confronts ancient Near Eastern polytheism where gods were ranked and compared. God identifies Himself with His covenant name emphasizing His sacred otherness and moral perfection. This self-designation reinforces His transcendence while reminding Israel of their unique relationship with the incomparable God.
