Isaiah 40:23

King James Bible

"That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity."

Commentary

God reduces even the most powerful political rulers to nothingness, demonstrating His absolute sovereignty over human authority. The Hebrew term for "nothing" (ayin) suggests complete non-existence, emphasizing that earthly power is utterly insignificant before God. Those who administer justice and make decisions affecting nations are rendered as empty as vapor or breath. The parallel structure reinforces the previous thought while "vanity" (tohu) echoes the primordial chaos before creation, suggesting that God can unmake human institutions as easily as He made the cosmos.
