Isaiah 40:14

King James Bible

"With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?"

Commentary

These rhetorical questions emphasize God's complete self-sufficiency and independence in wisdom. Unlike earthly rulers who rely on advisors, God needs no external counsel or teacher, underscoring His infinite and uncreated wisdom. The repetition of 'taught' drives home the impossibility of anyone educating God in justice or imparting knowledge to Him. In the context of Isaiah 40, this counters any notion that idols or foreign gods could rival Yahweh's understanding. This climactic question caps the series by asserting that no one has ever revealed wisdom's path to God. The accumulation of these questions prepares for God's incomparable creative power described in the following verses.
