Genesis 4:6

King James Bible

"And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?"

Commentary

God initiates direct dialogue with Cain after rejecting his offering, demonstrating divine concern even amid displeasure. This personal address shows God pursuing the sulking Cain rather than abandoning him, offering an opportunity for reflection before sin takes hold. God's first question confronts Cain's anger directly, not to gain information but to prompt self-examination. The rhetorical nature invites Cain to consider whether his fury is justified, given that proper worship standards were apparently known but unmet. The second question addresses Cain's visible dejection, literally his 'fallen face,' highlighting how internal attitudes manifest physically. God observes both the anger and depression, warning that unchecked emotions are leading Cain toward the first murder.
