Genesis 2:20

King James Bible

"And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him."

Commentary

Adam exercises divinely delegated authority by naming the animals, an act that in ancient Near Eastern thought signified understanding their nature and establishing relationship with them. This systematic naming of creatures by category (domestic, aerial, and wild) demonstrates humanity's unique role as God's image-bearer with dominion over creation. Despite Adam's meaningful connection with the animal kingdom, none proved to be a suitable companion who could correspond to him as an equal partner. The Hebrew term 'help meet' (ezer kenegdo) indicates one who complements and stands alongside as a counterpart, preparing for Eve's creation as the resolution to human aloneness.
