Genesis 1:29

King James Bible

"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."

Commentary

God announces a divine gift with the attention-grabbing "Behold," emphasizing the generous provision about to be described. This declaration comes immediately after creating humanity, establishing God as the ultimate provider who determines what sustains human life. The original diet encompasses two categories: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees with seeds, spanning the entire earth. This comprehensive provision highlights both the abundance and the vegetarian nature of humanity's first food source, with seeds ensuring perpetual regeneration of the food supply. "Meat" here means food in general (as in older English usage), officially designating plants as humanity's sustenance. This prescriptive statement establishes the pre-Fall dietary arrangement, which many interpret as God's ideal before sin entered the world and meat-eating was later permitted after the flood.
