Genesis 1:24

King James Bible

"And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so."

Commentary

God commands the earth itself to produce land animals, showing creation's responsiveness to divine speech. The phrase 'after his kind' establishes distinct categories of creatures, emphasizing order and intentional design rather than random emergence. Three categories encompass all terrestrial animals: domesticated animals (cattle), small creatures that move close to the ground (creeping things), and wild animals (beasts). This classification reflects an ancient Hebrew understanding of the animal kingdom based on their relationship to humans and movement patterns. This formulaic conclusion confirms the immediate and complete fulfillment of God's command. The brevity underscores creation's effortless obedience to divine will, a recurring pattern throughout Genesis 1.
