King James Bible
"And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father."
Paul emphasizes that believers already possess the status of sons through faith in Christ, not through law-keeping. This sonship is the basis for what follows—God acts because of this established relationship, reversing the typical order where the Spirit's presence might be seen as creating sonship. The same God who sent His Son into the world now sends the Son's Spirit into believers' innermost being. This parallels the incarnation and shows the Trinity's unified work in salvation, with the heart representing the center of human personality and will. The Spirit enables believers to address God with the same intimate Aramaic term Jesus used (Mark 14:36), combining the familiar 'Abba' with the Greek 'Father.' This cry expresses both childlike intimacy and the Spirit's own testimony to our adoption, proving our sonship experientially.
