King James Bible
"For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children."
Paul identifies Hagar allegorically with Mount Sinai, the location where the Mosaic Law was given. By placing Sinai in Arabia (outside the promised land), Paul emphasizes its association with slavery and separation from the inheritance of God's people. Paul draws a parallel between Sinai and the present earthly Jerusalem, the center of Judaism that rejected Christ. The term 'answereth to' means 'corresponds with,' showing both represent the same spiritual principle of bondage to the law. Just as Hagar was a slave who bore children into slavery, so Jerusalem under the law produces spiritual slaves. Paul argues that those who rely on law-keeping for righteousness remain in spiritual bondage rather than experiencing the freedom of grace.
