Galatians 3:12

King James Bible

"And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them."

Commentary

Paul contrasts two fundamentally different systems: law-based righteousness depends on human performance, while faith relies on God's grace. He argues that the Mosaic law operates on a principle of works, not trust, distinguishing it from the gospel's faith-centered approach. Quoting Leviticus 18:5, Paul emphasizes that the law promises life only through perfect obedience to all its commands. This sets up an impossible standard that exposes humanity's need for justification by faith rather than works, reinforcing his argument against requiring Gentiles to follow Jewish law.
