Galatians 2:15

King James Bible

"We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,"

Commentary

Paul identifies himself and Peter as ethnic Jews, born into the covenant people with the Law of Moses. This phrase emphasizes their privileged religious heritage and separation from pagan practices, setting up a contrast that Paul will soon overturn. Jews commonly viewed Gentiles as 'sinners' by default—those outside the covenant who lived without God's law. Paul uses this typical Jewish perspective ironically, as he's about to argue that both Jews and Gentiles are equally justified only through faith in Christ, not ethnic identity or law-keeping.
