Exodus 33:6

King James Bible

"And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb."

Commentary

The Israelites voluntarily removed their jewelry and finery as an act of mourning and repentance following the golden calf incident. This physical stripping symbolized their shame and served as a tangible sign of contrition before God, who had threatened to withdraw His presence from among them. The location emphasizes the tragic irony—at the very mountain where they received the covenant and witnessed God's glory, they now stand stripped and humbled. Horeb (another name for Sinai) marks both their highest spiritual moment and their deepest failure.
