Exodus 33:22

King James Bible

"And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:"

Commentary

God announces the imminent manifestation of His glory—His visible presence and radiant majesty. This occurs after Moses requests to see God's glory, but direct exposure to the divine presence would be fatal to any mortal. God provides a protective shelter in the mountain's crevice, likely on Mount Sinai where Moses received the law. The rock serves as both a physical shield and a symbol of God's provision of safety in His overwhelming presence. God's hand acts as an additional barrier, emphasizing His tender care in protecting Moses from the full intensity of divine glory. This anthropomorphic image conveys God's personal involvement in ensuring Moses experiences His presence without being consumed by it.
