Exodus 33:17

King James Bible

"And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name."

Commentary

God agrees to Moses' request to accompany Israel personally, not just through an angel. This follows Moses' bold intercession after the golden calf incident, demonstrating how persistent prayer can move God to show mercy even after serious rebellion. God explains His favorable response stems from Moses finding unmerited favor with Him. This grace isn't earned but reflects God's sovereign choice to show special kindness to Moses as mediator between Himself and Israel. God's knowledge of Moses "by name" indicates an intimate, personal relationship beyond mere awareness. In ancient Near Eastern culture, knowing someone's name implied authority and deep familiarity, highlighting Moses' unique position as God's friend and spokesman.
