Exodus 33:14

King James Bible

"And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest."

Commentary

God responds directly to Moses' plea for divine accompaniment as Israel journeys to the Promised Land. This comes after the golden calf incident when God initially threatened to send only an angel, making this personal response a restoration of intimate relationship. God promises His actual presence—literally His 'face' in Hebrew—will accompany Moses and Israel. This distinguishes mere divine protection from God's personal, manifest presence that had been visible in the pillar of cloud and fire. Beyond guidance, God promises ultimate rest—both the physical rest of reaching Canaan and the spiritual rest of dwelling securely under divine favor. This rest represents the completion of the exodus journey and fulfillment of covenant promises.
